There's No Place Like Hell

Matthew 10:28, And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Our sermon verse and text for today was all about that place where we do not want to go.  Although the Bible teaches that the road leading to hell is WIDE, to accommodate all who are going there.

The context around this verse is when Jesus was sending His disciples out, 16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

The disciples when heading out were not to fear mere man, fear is the enemy of faith.  They were to operate on faith, 19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.  Fear would eliminate the right words at the time you need them.  20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.  That is how Stephen spoke when he was brought before the council.  The Holy Spirit was talking through Stephen, chastising the council for crucifying Jesus.

So in our verse for today’s sermon, Matthew 10:28, it is saying to fear Him who is able to destroy both body and soul in Hell, is rightfully referring to God.  Many think that it is referring to Satan who can deceive you into sin and eventually that wide roadway to hell.  But it is only God who owns the authority to condemn the guilty.

In a recent Pew Study less than 1% don’t believe there is a hell.  And a whopping 70+% believe that they are not bad enough to go to hell.  They believe that by not committing any of the BIG sins that they are OK.  But the only correct way to look at transgressions is to understand that God is Holy.  Holy beyond our highest thoughts of what Holy is.  So wrong doing cannot abide with Holy, they just don’t go together.  Man’s only hope and salvation is that when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are clothed with His righteousness.  And as we live out our lives serving Christ, the Holy Spirit helps us to become acceptable for God’s Kingdom.  When Jesus returns, in a twinkling of an eye, we will be transformed.  And I believe that it is in that twinkling of an eye is when we will be sanctified and ready to walk on those streets of gold.

A man may go to Heaven

Without health, without riches,

without honors, without learning, without friends.

But he can never go there

WITHOUT CHRIST.
