Born Blind

John 9: 4 We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me as long as it is daytime. Night is coming when no one can work.

In the Book of John when Jesus and His disciples came upon a blind man, the assumption of those days was that the blind person was being punished by his sins or his parent’s sins.  1Now as Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man or his parents?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but he was born blind so that the acts of God may be revealed through what happens to him. 4 We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me as long as it is daytime. Night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may gain their sight, and the ones who see may become blind.”

Throughout the Gospels it is very clear what the work of Jesus was, to search and to save those that were lost.  He is the Light of the World and He would cast His light into all darkness that He encountered.  But, did you know that, we were ALL born blind!

We all had to have our eyes opened to the truths of God’s word.  Our sight came from many different places, parents, Sunday school teachers, Pastors, Confirmation classes, fellowship with church members, Bible studies, and many more.  BUT, the Bible is also clear that we cannot come on our own; John 6:44, For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up. John 14:6 Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

We worship an awesome God that draws sinners to Himself to live with for eternity.  Wow.  Once our blindness has been cured and we can see the light, our work begins.  We must work while it is day.  We must share the good news; we must spread the light, Luke 11:33, "No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a hidden place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in can see the light.”

Last week on Jeopardy, the college championships, one of the questions was; in John 14:6, Jesus is referred to as these three things?  Sad to say that only one of the students knew the final jeopardy answer: way, truth, and life.  He won as that night’s champion.

Sunday morning’s newspaper had a heading that Canyonville Christian Academy will drop the word Christian from their name in hopes of gaining more international students. So the question is; will the international mix of students eventually cause the ‘light’ to weaken?  Or would the name Christian remaining in the name draw students that wanted a Christian infused education. When the Israelites were conquering all of those pagan tribes and cultures as they entered the land flowing with milk and honey, they were instructed to completely eliminate ALL people, and most of all don’t intermarry with the pagans because He knew that over time they would cause them to worship false god’s.  Mixing Religions can’t work unless there is compromise!
