The Great White Throne

And as it is appointed unto men once to die,

but after this the judgment: Hebrews 9:27

Death for all is inevitable, life as we know it will end. In Revelation we read that following the 1,000 year Millennium that the unsaved souls will be raised to face judgement.  Rev. 20:11-15, Then I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And there were open books, and one of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds. 14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire. 15And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (This is the 2nd resurrection; the saved are raised prior to the millennium when Jesus returns)

Those who will stand before the great, white throne to be judged are those who are lost in their sins and eternally condemned, those who have not been saved by surrendering their lives to Jesus Christ. In John 5:22, Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son,  so we can go to Jesus now for repentance and forgiveness, or face Him in judgement for not accepting Him now, He is Savior or Judge.

Who will the lost souls be who have to face the Great White Throne of Judgement?  There are 4 categories;

  1. The out and out sinner.  That person who wants nothing to do with God.

  2. The self-righteous person.  Those who think the gospel is only for the thief, the murderer, the evil person. They think that because they are nice people and live good lives that they are Heaven-bound.

  3. The Procrastinator.  This group knows they need Jesus for salvation, and they fully intend to someday. Nobody is promised tomorrow; today is the day of salvation.

  4.  Lost church members. There are many church members, especially with todays ‘soft preaching’, that haven’t been told that they need to be ‘born again’. Jesus said, unless a man be born again of water and Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God

The White Throne Judgement will bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.  But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment.  God has books to be opened that will reveal everything that was done or spoken that was not repented of.  One’s influence upon others will also be judged, as well as the failure to do those good and right things that we should have done.

To avoid standing in front of The Great White Throne, doomed to the lake of fire, we need to have our names written in the Book of Life. We need to have forgiveness of our sins, we need to understand that we cannot achieve this on our own, but only through the blood of Jesus. We must repent (turn) from your sins, and turn to Jesus. Asking Him to forgive us of our sins, and acknowledge Him as Lord of our life.

Forgiveness and grace are freely offered to us in this life through the atoning work of Jesus Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. But if we reject the Lord Jesus in this life, we will receive no mercy in the judgment. Romans 8:1, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
