Our Daily Helper

Fruits of the Spirit

Who wouldn’t want a dedicated helper, who was faithful every day of our lives, to guide us, teach us, encourage us, and give us wisdom?  Besides all that He helps us with, He also gives us gifts?  It shouldn’t be too difficult to get people on board for something that good.  This helper has been around since the 2nd verse in the Bible, Genesis 1:2, where it is written that He was part of the creation of the world.

He is still very much around today.  He is the indwelling Spirit of the Trinity that resides within each believer to help, comfort and guide us to everlasting life.  (I believe that the Holy Spirit is what awakens the heart, mind and soul of a non-believer to draw them to a relationship with Jesus Christ.)   In John 6:44 it states, No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.  So God sends His Holy Spirit to draw that person to Christ.

That is where we learned that we are born again and Justified by the work of the Holy Spirit.  Transforming the believer into a new person in Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:17.   There are many things besides leading us to salvation, that the Holy Spirit does for the believer, Romans 8:26-27, Prays for us,  John 16:13-14, Guides us to all truth,  Romans 8:5-6, helps us fight sin, 1 Peter 1:2, made you Holy, Romans 8:15-16, children of God.

Besides all the help He gives us, He also gives us gifts, the Spiritual Fruits of the Spirit.  The Fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

  • Love is the 1st and most important fruit.  Love is a spiritual anchor of truth in relationship to both God and neighbor.  It is a love that seeks the good of others.  God is Love, He has unfailing Love for His children.

  • Joy is the second fruit mentioned.  The word joy appears 60 times in the New Testament.  This joy does not come from outward circumstances, but is found within each believer’s life.  The Bible says that the joy of the Lord is our strength.

  • Peace, This fruit of the Spirit refers to tranquility of mind, body and soul.  Jesus said, “The peace I give is not as the peace that the world may give”.  Paul said that it is a Peace that surpasses all understanding.

  • Long Suffering or Patience, Christians should be able to hold strong in the midst of trials and difficulty.  The Holy Spirit will give you patience to hold on under difficult situations and circumstances.

  • Kindness, is God‘s virtuous gift to be able to respond to the special needs of others who are hurting or in need.

  • Goodness, Goodness is described as the generosity that overflows from kindness.  The action of helping someone in need.  The Spirit desires to use us as a vehicle through which the goodness of God flows.

  • Faithfulness, The Spirit of the Lord wants to make us responsible people in every area of our lives.  It is said that you cannot have faith in God without being faithful.

  • Gentleness, is closely associated with humility, it is a virtue that is needed when confronted by the opposition.

  • Self-Control, Self-control is the victory over the desires of the flesh.  It is the ability to crucify the flesh and walk in the Spirit.  It is trusting the Spirit to overcome the desires of the flesh.  Romans 8:13 tells us that if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

It would appear that to become a believer would be a very smart thing to do.  Look at all of the help you get to stay on course, to grow spiritually, and to have the assuring hope in life eternal.  The job of the Holy Spirit is to help Christians know, be, and do what God wants.
