The Unseen Powers

Many years ago, if I remember correctly, it was the comedian Flip Wilson who you would see on his TV show with a little Angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other.  These two miniature characters were forever fighting with Flip's mind to cause, tempt or deceive him to either good or evil.  That just affirms the fact that people do know and understand that there are unseen forces that are among us daily.

Chapter 10 of the book of Daniel describes a being who appeared to God’s prophet to explain a troubling vision.  Daniel had prayed and fasted for three weeks asking God to grant him understanding (Dan. 10:1–3). Although Daniel was heard as soon as he uttered the words of his prayer, the appearance of this heavenly visitor was delayed due to resistance from “the prince of the Persian kingdom” (Dan. 10:13). This “prince” appears to have been another spiritual being who was similar to the angel Michael but was defeated by him. Elsewhere in the Bible, Michael is described as an “archangel” (1 Thess. 4:16; Jude 1:9). The ordinary world in which we live is affected by unseen powers that seek to hinder God and are opposed by His servants.  "Be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1Peter 5:8

The apostle Paul refers to these powers in Colossians 1:16, where he speaks of invisible “thrones,” “powers,” “rulers,” and “authorities.” He uses similar language in Ephesians 6:12, when he says that our struggle: “is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”  The devil has command over countless evil spirits and they are continually looking for new recruits.  They will deceive many, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." Matthew 7:13-14.

Paul writes that Jesus Christ already existed prior to all created beings and is superior to all powers whether visible or invisible (Col. 1:17). In view of this, the order and rank that may exist among the angelic powers hardly matters. Christ’s supremacy combined with Daniel’s example indicates that a believer’s prayer can affect the unseen powers.

We are no match against satan and his legions on our own;  John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."   But the Bible tells us how we can defeat him;  James 4:7, Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon their knees.
